How It Works

What We Do

Community-driven recovery support through peer groups, sober activities, and real connection.

Our Mission

Helping queer men build and maintain recovery

Strength Over Speed (SOS) is a grassroots, all-volunteer community-based project whose mission is to help queer men begin and maintain recovery from methamphetamine addiction.

SOS offers vital community support through multiple weekly peer-led support groups, sober social activities, and community volunteer projects.

Both active and past users of crystal meth often feel isolated and afraid to talk openly because of social stigma and negative media representations. As queer men in recovery, we help each other diffuse the stigma and show that we can overcome addiction and engage in meaningful relationships and community.

If you’re struggling, you’re welcome here

If you’re struggling in any way with your methamphetamine use — know a close friend or family member who is struggling, or are just curious — we welcome you to join us at our next SOS meeting at Peer Seattle.

Sober Social Activities

Recovery doesn’t mean staying home. SOS organizes sober social gatherings so members can build community and friendships outside of meetings.

🏛

Community Projects

Volunteer projects that give members a sense of purpose and connection to the broader queer community in Seattle.

How Our Groups Work

An open format, by design

SOS groups are deliberately different from many other recovery formats. Here’s what you can expect.

1

Open Discussion

Unlike 12-step groups, SOS has no cross-talk restrictions. You can ask questions, respond to others, and have genuine back-and-forth conversation.

2

Peer-Facilitated

Groups are led by members in recovery — people with real lived experience. No clinicians, no fees, no sign-ups.

3

Judgment-Free

You can be wherever you are in your journey. Thinking about quitting, in early recovery, or long-term sober — all are welcome.

4

Queer-Centered

SOS is specifically designed for gay, bi, and queer men and male-identified people. Topics unique to our community — including sex, identity, HIV, and relationships — are part of the conversation.

No experience necessary.

You don’t need to have quit using, have a sobriety date, or follow any particular framework. Just come as you are.

Both SOS and 12-step?

Many of our members attend both SOS and 12-step groups. We’re not an either/or — we’re an additional layer of support within our community.
